I've published books (for a friend) on Amazon CreateSpace and Kindle using MS Word but am new to Adobe InDesign. Tried Adobe's free trial for several days and realized trial-and-error would take too long. This book was the answer and I highly recommend it.One reason I wanted InDesign was the Book Files feature. It allows me to store chapters as separate documents, then automatically combine them to create a book. Book Design Made Simple doesn't cover Book Files but does cover "Creating a separate master page for each chapter" on page 363. I think Book Files is a simpler solution.Adobe has a tutorial on Book Files: [...]

As a first time author, I was fortunate to have Glenna Collett personally guide me through the complex book production process. Her savvy business sense and quick decision making provided me with invaluable suggestions and resources including cover design, interior design and even my overall branding image. She immersed herself in my book project to make sure every important detail was taken care of, and I am grateful to have consulted with her. I am proud of my book, and if the visual aspects of a book alone truly propel a book into bestseller status- then mine is sure to be a success! Although Glenna is no longer personally consulting with authors and their book projects, her multiple-award winning book co-authored with Fiona Raven: "Book Design Made Simple, 2nd Edition" is the next best thing! This resource not only gives you the step-by-step process of designing your book, it also includes important advice as to why you should do each step, and the pitfalls to avoid. At the end of the book is a beneficial "Self-Publishing Process" to use as a guideline for your overall book production. I highly recommend this award winning book which was a great resource as I designed my second book!

Invaluable tool in learning about both book design and InDesign. I picked it up in the middle of typesetting my first book, while I was trying to figure out InDesign with the help of youtube videos. My problem was I didn't know enough publisher language to search out the right answers to my questions, and I didn't have a good overview of the book-building process using InDesign. This book is an excellent reference that filled in both of those gaps. On my next project I started out using the step-by-step process in this book and it took me thru without a hitch. It's a great platform to launch from, to become familiar with the process at the basic level, and from there you can branch out and try different looks and settings. At some points during the process it was just like following a recipe--holding the book in one hand and clicking settings with the other. Then I'd set the book down and work for awhile, picking it up for reference when necessary. I marked places that described certain processes that had to be repeated periodically, and I'm sure I will continue to use this book as a reference for a long time. I came away with a good understanding of book-building from start to finish, and I was able to work all the InDesign processes even though I was using a different version of the program than that referenced in the book. I will just add that a thorough (and desperate) search of Amazon did not produce any other books that covered this specific topic of book design with InDesign. I have given it a place of honor on the reference book shelf!

Book Design Made Simple by Fiona Raven and Glenna Collett is an invaluable resource for would-be authors contemplating self-publishing. While it is true that anyone can self-publish a book, the reality is that there are many obstacles between the first words on the page and the first copy off the press. Book Design Made Simple is a logical, clearly-written guide to an efficient, organized self-publishing process. It contains practical technical information on how to use the industry-standard publishing platform InDesign to format and assemble a book, design advice to help the author create a polished, aesthetically-pleasing finished product, and a production blueprint to guide the author’s development efforts. I purchased a copy of Book Design Made Simple midway through my own self-publishing process and it has without a doubt helped me create a better-looking, more professional product.

I'm an InDesign instructor- so I didn't really need the InDesign how to part, but I did skim thru and it's excellent for a new user to get up to speed with InDesign. What I really appreciate is the organization of the book pages, and all the things to think about as I get into laying out my first book. The concepts are presented well and I will be more successful in my project because of this book - thanks!

Great book for those just starting with InDesign. I had some hands-on help with InDesign and book design before I bought this book, and I found the material helped supplement and fill in the details and techniques I'd forgotten to write down, or that we didn't get to. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting into self-publishing. My first novella turned out fantastically!

This is a book designer's dream! I can't emphasize (in italics, of course) how incredibly useful this book as. I spend my days designing books in InDesign and the information in this book took the quality of m work up several notches.

News flash!! This book is actually written for those who DON'T understand InDesign as opposed to the Adobe Classroom in a Book written for those who really don't needed it leaving everyone else in the dark. The books are the same price. Sadly I own them both. It depends on how much you know going in. If your not the most technologically savvy person. This the book for you.
