Jennifer Shahade, age 24, is an international chess icon. A chess master and two-time American Women’s Chess Champion (2002, 2004), She has represented the U.S in international competitions in countries all over the world, including Spain, Russia, China, India, and Brazil. In 2002, Shahade received a degree in comparative literature from NYU, where she was an editor for the literary magazine Brio. Her writing has appeared in Chess Life Magazine, New In Chess, and the Los Angeles Times Book Review. Through the non-profit Chess-In-The Schools, she coaches inner-city youths, including a girls’ class, and the three-time National Junior High Championship team, I.S. 318. Shahade is a member of the artist collective Mano/Damno, a group that aims to blur the boundaries between life and art, and has participated in performance art projects at New York’s psychogeography festival, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and The Viewing Room Art Gallery.She lives in Brooklyn.

I had read Passages 20 years ago, then donated it to a library. From then on, I regretted not having it when I talked with friends about the transitions in adult life. The last time I had that regret, I happily remembered that I could order used books easily on Amazon, so I got two copies. One is to lend and one is to keep.What is so special about this book is that it picks up where other books end. There are thousands of books about infants, young children and teens. We fully understand that growth is a process and that, while each person is unique, there are commonalities in development. However, once we are adults, we seem to think we are static.Passages describes the normal growth throughout life. It is comforting to see, for example, that most people have to seriously reassess their goals in their 40's.This book is especially encouraging for parents of adult chidren. It affirms that we are changing our own priorities and it helps us to see how our needs and the ever changing needs of our offspring can complement one another. Maybe most importantly, we are reminded that their attention to their own careers and children right when we crave more intimacy with them is normal and healthy.

Passages was the first book I ever read that set out the various "passages" that we go through as we begin to mature. I was bowled over, because I had begun to realize how different I was at various ages, going through obvious changes, every 10 years or so. I called these stages "Plateaus", and felt so validated in my own awareness of these stages. At the time it was first published in the 70's, I thought it was brilliant, and best of all, reassuring. I was in my early 30's then, and the book really gave me hope for my future. I have to say I have continued to be very aware of these passages, which seem to occur roughly every 10 years or so (I'm a year away from turning 80, and it's still happening!). I was thrilled when Gail Sheehy actually came out with a follow-up book about what life is like in our 50's and 60's. If you want to understand what the heck has been happening to you and those you know - in a way that clears up so much confusion, read this book - it's timeless!

I LOVED this book! Read it too late to change things in my life, as I am a senior citizen, but as I read it I felt she had been a silent observer in things that I did. A must read for girls and young women before they attach themselves to a male and fail to learn who THEY are supposed to be and how to proceed with the only life they are given. Give this book to a 7th or 8th grader and older so they can reach their full potential. Incredible read.

Wow! This book was like talking to myself at the age of 20, then 30, and now 40!!!! This books addresses all those thoughts we have and think no one else could possibly think this!! As a therapist, I love how deeply the author goes into developmental stages of adults with reference to Erik Erickson and many other know professionals! I found myself reading passages to my significant other and he actually wanted to hear them!

I had gotten this book when it first came out in the 70's. Lost a lot of books in the 80's and now I am getting some back. This one and her Passages for women "the Silent Passage" were very helpful in understanding many things in my life. The 'generic life cycles' was understandable and useful.

I bought this book for my son, who at 36 yrs. is finally having to accept more responsibity and asked some questions. I read the book abour 40 years ago and remembered it. I say that is worth 5 stars

I read this as a mid-teen when it came out and sent it to a young friend as he entered the Naval Academy. I think it's helpful no matter what your age, but especially for a young person to reinforce being sensitive to others' journeys.

This book refreshed me: reading stories of others facing the same patterns, and understanding how these patterns comprise an essential part of our culture.

About the Author ALFRED MARSHALL, distinguished British economist, was born in London on July 26, 1842. His interest in economics arose out of his earlier studies of philosophy and mathematics. Following his tenure as first principal of University College, Bristol (1877­1881), Marshall taught at Cambridge University from 1885 to 1908, and lived in Cambridge for the remainder of his life. Marshall's chief work is the Principles of Economics (1890; eighth edition 1920). One of the founders of the so-called neo­classical school, Marshall argued that the economy would run best if left on its own, and that the normal functioning of a market econ­omy leads to full employment. Though influenced by the ideas of John Stuart Mill, Marshall substantially altered Mill's frame of ref­erence: instead of analyzing how the production of goods and the distribution of income among different social classes affected, often dramatically, economic well-being, he studied price setting in a static context, focusing on small, gradual changes and the complex interrelations by which market balance, or "equilibrium," is achieved. And while the earlier political economists Adam Smith and David Ricardo had identified labor as the force deter­mining the exchange value of goods, Marshall identified it as sat­isfaction of consumers' desires, or utility. Marshall's orderly Victorian picture of supply, demand, and price, particularly at a time when contemporary socialists and trade unions were challenging the status quo, came under attack by later economists, including John Maynard Keynes, who demon­strated that market forces can be ineffective in promoting full employment and who advocated enlightened government inter­vention over laissez-faire policies. Nonetheless, Marshall's work continues to influence orthodox economics. Alfred Marshall died in Cambridge on July 13, 1924. Marshall's other published works include Industry and Trade (1919) and Money, Credit, and Commerce (1923).

It’s just a book of designs. I thought they were stencils.

The art isnt knot work its figures and i wanted knot work designs

Since this is a stencil I wished the papers were thicker.

It wasn't what I wanted but it is still a very good buy.

The artwork was heavier than I was hoping for, not as delicate design as I wanted. It does have some interesting designs though, so that was a saving grace.

About the Author
Emma Pérez is the author of Gulf Dreams, considered one of the first Chicana lesbian novels in print. Her Forgetting the Alamo received the Christopher Isherwood Writing Grant and widespread critical acclaim. She is also the author of the history The Decolonial Imaginary: Writing Chicananas Into History from the Indiana University Press. Her long-time passion for lesbian fiction has kept her scouring shelves for stories while teaching Ethnic Studies, Chicana feminism, queer theory and creative writing. She lives in Denver, Colorado.
